Abstract

Despitethestrategicimportanceoftheprivate-school sectortoeducationpolicyreform,andageneralbeliefinthesuperiorityof privateschools,thereisverylittleevidenceontherelativeeffectsof suchschoolingincomparisonwithpublicschools.Thispaperreviewsthe currentevidenceintheUnitedStatesandUnitedKingdomontherelationship betweenprivate-schoolattendanceandearnings.Theeffectsofprivate schoolingonfutureearningareimportantfortheequityandefficiencyof educationsystems,arguablymoresothananyeffectsontestscores.Yet,the reviewuncoversonly4studiesofthisrelationshipfortheUnitedStates, and11studiesfortheUnitedKingdom.Theyshowareasonablyrobust correlationbetweenhigherearningsandprivateschooling,butasummary explanationoftheprivate-schoolearningspremiumcannotbeeasily identified.Theavailableevidencevariesacrossestimationtechniques,and probablyfailstoincludethefullsetofdirectandindirecteffectsof privateschoolingonearnings.However,therateofreturntoinvestmentin privateschoolingincomparisonwithpublicschoolingiscalculatedfrom simulationsoftheearningspremium.Thisrateofreturn,whichincludesthe directandindirecteffectsofprivateschooling,ismodest,ataround3 percentfortheUnitedStatesand5percentfortheUnitedKingdom.
