Abstract
This paper examines the intergenerational social mobility of y in Britain, from a secondary analysis of the National Child Development show that by examining the relationship between social class backgroun tested 'ability' of boys and girls, it is possible to advance our understand of the key processes that help facilitate the reproduction of class ine particular, we emphasise that the advantages of the service class over rests not just upon their ability to impart appropriate cultural capital to ren, but also on other 'secondary' factors, notably material resources. W boys born in advantaged social positions have more resources than girls in maintaining their class advantages, and we indicate some patterns of closure within the 'service class'.
