Following a sharp increase in youth unemployment after the recession of 2008/09, the youth unemployment rate1 has been falling consistently in recent years. In the last quarter of 2014, youth unemployment was down 3.8 percentage points on the previous year to 12.4%. There has also been a substantial reduction in the number of young people Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET). For 2014, the Department for Education2 reported that NEETs totalled 7.3% of all 16-18 year olds, down 0.4 percentage points on the previous year.
